The german implementation which was mentioned in /. news was done using
FPGA. Why not just program the FPGA for audio work and save the effort
of using something like GPU for audio.

At least I have good experiences on using FPGAs for signal processing.
Cheaper than DSP and more flexible and powerful. However, much more
difficult to program.
