That is strange, very strange. I'm running gnome and I find the
preferences related to cdrom automounting in "Settings", "Peripherals",
"Cd properties" (or "Preferences", "Cd properties" in 8.0). 

I can't think of anything that could randomly trigger cdrom accesses...
