Continuing to answer my own mailings, thanks to Eric, Dave, Steve and Mario 
for pointers both here and on IRC. I now have lots of reading to do and I'm 
fairly confident that I will be able to produce at least conformance level 
"A" web pages without too much trouble, which is my immediate concern. I 
already know and use the Firefox Web Developer extensions, the validation 
tools are most useful.

I look forward to the day this is all installed by default and enabled with a 
single key-combo or something similarly trivial from a user perspective. 
Anyone who can come up with a simple Firefox extension will earn my undying 
gratitude (FWIW).
