I installed v1.1.0 from Debian repository and tried to run it. I get the
following:

david at eurolap:~$ amsynth
amSynth 1.1.0
Copyright 2001-2004 Nick Dowell and others.
amSynth comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY
This is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it
under certain conditions; see the file COPYING for details
ALSA: cannot open audio device hw:0
amSynth.bin: pcm.c:695: snd_pcm_close: Assertion `pcm' failed.
/usr/bin/amsynth: line 61: 3861 Aborted
$BINDIR/amSynth.bin $*

********** there was an error! **********

please check your config in ~/.amSynthrc

I lessed through that file but don't see what might be wrong. Whatever's
there is whatever the package installation put there ...

My system plays PCM files just fine.
