Josh, try turning ACPI off.  I have learned that some poor ACPI 
implementations interfere greatly with CPU horsepower, and this may be 
causing your problems.  You might try other kernel options as well, 
including leaving ACPI on but turning IOAPIC off, because if IOAPIC is 
off, multi-CPU functionality including hyperthreading does not have the 
needed registers, and is therefore disabled.
