If you lift the AC ground on some equipment it simply isn't
'correctly grounded' anymore. 

To be properly grounded, the connection to ground must have
sufficiently low resistance, and be permanent in the sense
that it can't be removed without removing power at the same
time. Signal cables fail on both grounds (pun not intended).
