It's all about brand recognition, where mp3 (mpeg layer 3) has gotten
such a stronghold as a music format, it wasn't possible to introduce an
Mpeg:revision 3 (Hence the jump to Mpeg4)


These days an "Mp3-player" will of course recognize just about anything
you throw at it, not least the formats that are without license fees.

To the the general public, the non geek audience it is still an "mp3".

You could probably get away with:


   -Download--MP3-----------

    sample1.ogg
    sample2.ogg
    ...


.. and nobody would notice.
