I agree - this is hackish and far from optimal. In the ideal world we
wouldn't need it. If it was designed this or similar way from start, we
wouldn't need it.

But the only alternative we had, was confusing to me and to Dave, which
is not a good sign :) Perhaps none of us here is particularly patient
when it comes to trying out new things, but I bet an average user is
much less patient and less willing to learn.

OK. Users should read documentation before doing stuff. They shouldn't
try to things they _can't_ do. They shouldn't file bad bug reports. They
shouldn't get angry and frustrated after first minor failure with the
new piece of software. Packagers should know what they're doing.
Politicians shouldn't lie and steal.

But I'm not holding my breath :) And that's why I tend to prefer
solutions that are fool-proof/human-nature-proof.
