That wouldn't ensure that the software is free when you get it, if a
middle man can strip the freedoms away. The GPL ensures that when you
get the software, you have all the freedoms that comes with free
software. This has been mentioned before in this thread, btw.

The GPL is about keeping the software free. No matter how it reaches
you, it's still free software.
