Not too much flames, just some campfire :)
Kde is a very good environnment, but it asks fore so much cpu power!
And what about Kde relation towards alsa and artsd?
For the cpu-hungry problem, same goes for gnome. I use for my sub-600 cpu icewm.
But I can use gtk apps because even if they are tied with libraries, I don't have to wait long for them. On the other side, when I launch a Kde app, it loads DCOPServer, and I have to wait longer. When it ends it says something like "Mutex destroy failure" (since ever). So kudos and all the best for audio apps+scripts based on KDE, I just hope that light solutions exists beside.
I hope the flames weren't too hot, but you asked for it ;-)
Peace on Earth
