I lost some data when testing the driver but that's how it crumbles.

I can't be bothered doing the capabilities stuff to my machine at the 
moment so I run as root when using jack.

I have been doing a lot of recording recently and arecord works 
perfectly well with user priveledges. Even while capturing/playing back 
  4 tracks over nfs.
