I was recording a particularly roaring jam last night and my HDD
overheated (I think).

Why does it always happen when you are doing your best work?

Anyway I have an extreemely large file which I cannot access with any of
the players I have.

Does anyone know how I can check the file to see if there is any useful
info in it and recover whatever was recorded?

I was using arecord so I assume that at least some of it was written to
disk.

I'm thinking I need to scan the file for the ggod info then cut it up
with some thing that cuts files into bits and discard the junk then put
it back together or just put the parts into seperate files.

Being on stage with the band in front of crowds shouting, "Get off! No!
We want normal music!", I think that was more like acting than anything
I've ever done.
