| I recommend ecasound. It's in the Debian packages; the website is

OK, thanks everyone for your suggestions. I'm pleased to discover the
laptop can handle 80 minutes of ecasound. rec also works fine. However
a few issues have arisen:

1. Distortion results when recording from some sources but not others.
~ Yamaha amplifier 'minidisc out' connection, Cambridge Audio CD player
out connection, Pioneer tuner out connection. If I record from a Sony
portable CD player 'line out' connection, there is no distortion. It
makes me suspect these devices are outputting more than line out volume.
~ They are all of good quality. Alteration of the input volume on the
command line of rec doesn't alter this distortion. I've attached the
ecasound -ev output.

2. The recording software stops if the source becomes silent,
identifying it as the USB device fault:

usbaudio: unregister dsp 14,19
hub.c: Cannot enable port 1 of hub 1, disabling port.
hub.c: Maybe the USB cable is bad?
hub.c: USB new device connect on bus 2/1, assigned device number 3
usbaudio: valid input sample rate 44100
<snip>

I don't consider the USB cable to be bad as it records fine for a full
length of 80 minutes as long as there is no silence. I'm using an
Edirol UA-1A audio capture device, simply an outboard DAC.

I would be grateful if any of you have comments or suggestions for me.

Thanks in advance,

Tim
