More likely to your nerves.

Some cards have driver problems at shutdown and some don't. Many of my 
cards cause noise when deactivated or power is turned off.

I've never been able to figure out how and have seen suggestions that it 
may even be acceptable behaviour.

You could also set the volume to a very low level.
