My laptop doesn't have midi capabilities on it's own
soundcard so this is not really an answer :-)
I've used my hp xe4100 with edirol's um-1s usb midi-interface.
The interface cost me 65EUR (~65USD). Not too expensive.
I also use the alsa module virmidi for routing midi data from
application to application.
