Hmm,

I found the important settings here were found in my brain, and not in 
alsa at all! For anyone experiencing similar problems, if you look at 
the 'tools' menu in your brain, and uncheck the box marked 'stupidity', 
and then check the box marked 'enable simple logic' then almost as if by 
magic you find the solution to the problem. For those of you more at 
home at the command line, simply do the following:

# chmod -x /etc/idiocy
