If the preemption and low-latency patches make no difference then
check `sysctl kernel/lowlatency', which should be set to 1.  If not,
then (as root) run `sysctl -w kernel/lowlatency=1'.  If that works,
you probably need to add it to some /etc/init.d startup script.
