actually there *is* an alsamixer issue, but i'm not certain that's 
the exact problem. alsamixer allows mute/unmute and volume adjustment 
on only a few things: master, pc speaker and capture. while it allows 
mute/unmute on the headphones column, no volume adjustment is 
allowed, nor is any adjustment of any of the other columns.
despite this, usign xmms sent to alsa hw:0 (w/o jack) sends sound out 
the headphone jack but not the speakers.
