I installed Gentoo on a couple of old Pismo Powerbooks. One of the 
tricks I had to learn was all the masked package stuff ;-)

The built-in "screamer" soundcard plays out fine, also with Jack, but 
it's impossible to get sound in. And sometimes the levels of the card 
get really wacky...

I actually found the Gentoo forums mostly pretty helpful for audio, 
although generally not aimed at music-producers, but more for people who 
wanted to listen to mp3s and watch vids. But there are a few people 
hanging around there who use things like Jack.

Didn't bother with it. I assume you need this for MIDI sequencing, 
because Jack runs in RT mode without this.

I used 2.4.22 sources [this was a while back], and it wasn't exactly my 
"high performance" machine...

I didn't have any trouble getting Jack started on the Pismo. Are you 
starting with Qjackconnect, or "by hand"? You might try the most basic 
incantation:

jackd -d alsa -d hw

and see if that gets you somewhere. And at the risk of sounding 
simplistic, you are sure it isn't an Alsamixer issue? Can you get sound 
out with the same mixer settings just using Alsa?
