Ok, i was too pedantic (and oversimplifying) myself. :-)

A sampler that truly allows you to come up with something "new" starting
from a sample (a pre-recorded sound) is a big, complex and often
expensive beast. The Kurzweil brand name comes to mind, among others.

It's far easier to fire up a "true" synthesizer and create something new
immediately.
It's a lot more difficult to begin with a sample, process it and come up
with something that's both "new" and musically pleasing.
