Could it be that alsamixer is actually looking at your onboard sound
instead of the 2496?

As Brett said, you want to use envy24control.  It's very similar to
the software described in the manual that came with my Delta 66 card,
so you can use your manual for reference.

I also second the suggestion for Planet CCRMA.  I'm not new to Linux
or Linux Audio, but once I installed Planet CCRMA I never even
considered not using it...
