sfxload is used only by souncards with onboard wavetable synthesizer,
for loading soundfonts into it, but isn't that the case

Yes, timidity can use soundfonts; you should put a line similar to this
one in the timidity.cfg file:

soundfont /where/is/my/soundfont.sf2

In debian the config file is /etc/timidity/timidity.cfg - don't know
other distros

Perfect, this is the right way of doing it if you don't have an onboard
synth. You can also use "timidity <file>.mid" directly.
