Any recent distribution should automatically load USB driver.
Which one are you using?  Did you compile your own kernel?ž

I use Slackware 10.1. And yes I compiled my own kernel with ALSA
as a module.

can I force load it with modprobe?

Yes.

It get's automatically loaded when I use mu USB to MIDI
XP MIDI MATE cable.

But this is on another computer, isn't it?

No it's on the same computer, that's what puzzles me.
The module loads for the MIDI MATE but not for
the DR-880.
When I do lsmod I see that snd-usb-audio is loaded????
