I'm slowly working my way through this booK:
http://www.amazon.com/Composing-Music-Approach-William-Russo/dp/0226732169

It seems quite good so far, and the exercises are satisfyingly brain-stretching.
I am largely self-taught and have very little formal training, so I'm finding
the book very useful.
