I tried ubuntu studio yesterday and i must admit that it worked better 
than the last fedora.
Actually with fedora 6 on my older laptop and the same card i had almost 
no xruns with 2 periods and 64 frames.

 
Which kernel are you using ? Did you tweak the irq priorities ?
