The basic action is to add a controlled amount
of distortion, but it's more complex than that. 

In the Aphex 204 it's combined with 'big bottom',
which basically is a compressor acting on low 
frequencies only.

Given some time, I could measure the 'real thing'
and find out what it does exactly.
