But it *is* possible to both measure and recreate non-
linear systems using convolution. If your input signal
is x(t), you need separate IRs to convolve with x, x^2,
x^3, etc. and sum the results. Finding the required IRs
from the measurements requires some mathematical trickery. 
But the results can be very convincing, for example a
'telephone' filter implemented this way sounds like the
real thing, unlike the simple bandpass + peaks + dips
often used to do this. Similar techniques can be used
to simulate vintage amps etc.
