what operating system are you using?

i use ubuntu, and it includes several applications for working with .m4a files:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=maverick&section=all&arch=any&searchon=all&keywords=m4a

of which the following looks the most useful:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/pacpl

which is a command-line application as far as i can tell
