I heard it's also possible to reference cards by unique IDs of some
sort, but this likely only works with interfaces that have a unique
number and I don't remember the details. Florian Faber certainly knows
how to do it.

I use shortnames myself, hw:UA25 here. I remember it's possible to enter
those numbers in the qjackctl GUI.
