the people i know who do this use sample libraries and killer sample
playback engines and amazing drum plugins such as the RMX Stylus or
similar. in a few cases, keyboard-workstations like those from Korg and
Yamaha (but these are older people).

but then again, it depends on the musical context. i would imagine that for
somethings these days, abelton live has a lot of applicability, what with
the aesthetics of contemporary advertising and visual media.
