No, in the former communistic states the situation for educated artists
was much better regarding to good payed jobs. I can't speak for Russia,
resp. former USSR, but I know statements of former musicians of the GDR.
The former GDR today still is the location were people I know here in
the Ruhrgebiet, go to give a concert or go to listen to a concert.
Former GDR is relatively far away from the Ruhrgebiet.
OTOH chances for freethinkers in those states were not that good ;),
OTOH years ago freedom in e.g. Western Germany had also some limits, I'm
a draft resister and the jail sentence on parole for my friends and me,
not to join the army of a nation that caused 2 world wars, was higher,
than the sentences for child rapist that time. The view that artists in
the former communistic states must have been conform with the
dictatorial regime, might be true, but I don't think it's different for
the western world ;).
