Not a recommendation, just brainstorming.

A temporary solution might be a cheap USB microphone, assumed the
onboard device should be halfway ok for the moment.

I've got no idea if those things do work and if they should do the job
how good or bad they'll do it.

Not for a Laptop, but as PCI card I got a TerraTec 24/96 stereo Envy24
card for around 30,-€ at Ebay, perhaps something similar is available
for a laptop.
