Not sure if this is progress or regression. I grabbed the jack_control
package, which also changed my jackd1 to jackd2. Not sure what the
difference is. But, now if I start jack I don't even get the xrun
messages, etc.
I stopped pulse completely. (yes, checked and it's not respawing!).

That's it.
That was with no -d. Adding in -d hw:1 etc gives the same results.
And
bob$ jack_control status

stopped
or
bob$ jack_control sm
--- switch master driver
DBus exception: org.jackaudio.Error.ServerNotRunning: Can't execute
method 'SwitchMaster' with stopped JACK server
