Thanks! Firewire may be the right way after all, it seems the PCI cards 
are still available (and inexpensive)

Also in the meantime we have learned a few things from other sources:

* avoid Tascam - they are not Linux-friendly

* the Presonus 1818VSL has plenty of channels and is reported to work 
under Linux

* Behringer is about to release this thing, will cost $200 USD:
