I find the whole discussion quite confusing to be honest. This is
probably linked to the history of the consortium and the fact its legal
status and who owns what for what purposes, and as consequence its goal,
is rather unclear.
The goal of the Cosortium is clearly set out in the policy page:
http://www.linuxaudio.org/policy
At this point it would be helpful to make a clear
distinction between
the following issues instead of using them interchangeably:
1. Sustainability of the consortium infrastructure (hardware, software
amd meatware).
Currently the entire content hosted under the LAO domain is located on the
Virginia tech server which is provided free of charge and is maintained
primarily by Robin and Ico. there are several other people who maintain
subdomains. Currently no one is paid to provide these services.
2. Promotion of GNU/Linux as a creative platform.
That is one of the core principals behind the establishment of the
Consortium.
3. Decoupling the commercial interests of some parties
from the
Linux audio community.
Decoupling has a negative connotation. Are you suggesting that Linux Audio
should have no commercial interests? If that is your opinion then I think
you are on the wrong mailing list.
Next to that, my personal take on advertising on
linuaudio.org is that
the Net is already crippled with ads. Online marketing techniques come
with strings attached such as the general development of pervasive
tracking systems and I find rather disappointing that the consortium is
OK to offer its audience and community to such deceptive practices.
That is a valid point and would be worth having a policy in regards to. As
we own the channel we can decide what tracking if any is included for
analytical purposes.
