Hi Ico,
Thanks for asking for my input. I've been out of the software world
completely since 2018, but it seems to me the best bet might be for you
(as a fellow academic) to ask the University of Oregon Open Source Lab
for hosting:
They accept donations towards their hosting costs, which seems more
sustainable to me than running a separate crowd-funding campaign for
This sounds like a great opportunity to revisit our
summer thread. We
have allowed ample time for people to come forward and nominate others
for this role. I honestly do not recall if the same message percolated
through our other LA* lists, but this is something we can always revisit
at a later date. We need to do some housekeeping first.
As it stands right now, I see great involvement and commitment from
Jeremy and Robin. I also think that leadership should not be equal to
sysadmin. It is too much work for one person. I also saw thoughtful
responses from Fons (copying all whose names are uttered--please pardon
the added email traffic, not sure who still is on the consortium list),
Nils, and then there also Dave who has been one of the pillars of this
community. Granted, recently he has transitioned onto a darker side
(Mac), but at least he is still in the *nix land :-). Lastly, there is
Daniel James who started this all. Last I spoke with him, he did not
have the bandwidth to take over. Out of respect for his contributions
and in hope he may offer some of his wisdom in this matter, I am also
copying him on this thread.
At any rate, my recommendation is to start with this pool of people to
form the initial working group. I am happy to start the ball rolling (I
guess I already am) and remain on this list and provide my 5-cents worth
where it may prove helpful. Aside from that, I'll happily and quietly
continue to observe from the sidelines.
Best,
Ico

Count me in. I can also send you something via IBAN directly.
Thank you for you continued effort to keep the system up and running!
