Hello all,
Sorry to have gone quiet for a bit, but I've been really busy with
articles and publicity work related to libre audio software!
* Trade magazine Pro Sound News Europe carried a feature on Linux
audio in the August issue, written by Simon Trask. I did an interview
for that, representing linuxaudio.org
* LinuxUser & Developer magazine has agreed to publish a monthly
'Audio Libre' feature; I wrote the first article about AGNULA/DeMuDi
and it will be out by the end of this month.
* The October issue of Sound on Sound is just out, with a two page
feature on JACK with OS X, also written by me.
I'm also working with Ron Parker to compile a promotional CD of 'made
with Linux' music. I've selected 15 tracks from over 900MB of Oggs
and MP3s collected from the internet, and Ron is doing the mastering
using Jamin at Mirror Image Studios. I hoping we'll be able to get
this CD distributed as a magazine coverdisc by the end of this year.
On the hardware manufacturers liaison side, I've been talking to AMD
on a regular basis, and we now have a technical contact there for
x86_64 porting issues. Please email me if you'd like to make contact
with them.

doing experimentations with doing music with GNU/Linux and Free

Hi Andrea,
Actually it's been the decision making rather than the finding which
has been the more difficult part. I was easily able to collect the
tracks from various websites, but I guess there's around 15 hours of
music there. In the end I settled for a simple formula of one track
per artist, usually their shortest one available so that we can get a
lot of different styles on the CD.
AMD has discussed the issue of hardware sponsorship - I think we
should make a concrete proposal for that, and the AGNULA project
would be a good candidate.
But they are also interested in helping with technical liaison on
native x86_64 ports of music and audio software. AMD's Digital Media
& Entertainment division works with several film and music studios in
the US, and I'd guess that at least some of those film studios are
using Linux already, for graphics work.

we could maybe discuss some way to share the resource between the two.

From my limited experience I'd say most 32-bit binaries will run on
x86_64 CPUs with a little tweak here and there. What's potentially
more interesting is native 64-bit distributions, since unlike the
proprietary system vendors, we have source code for all the software
we use.
UserLinux is producing a native x86_64 version of Debian, so is Ubuntu
I believe. The x86_64 version of SUSE 9.1 Professional is very slick,
and there are variants of Fedora and Gentoo (but I haven't tried
those). What no-one has done so far, to my knowledge, is produce an
audio workstation distribution based on any of these. So we have the
native 64-bit distros on the one hand, and the audio-specific distros
on the other, but there's no crossover between the two yet.

unfortunately not.
i'm glad if you let me know the results of booting dyne:bolic on your
Opteron. i'm planning to start rebuilding it for the 2.0 version and
will to do it on 64bit arch, after i reach to have one.
besides that i'd love to experiment with 64bit also for the other
specific software i'm developing and i fear i'd need to have physical
access to a machine for that.

i'm glad if you let me know the results of booting
dyne:bolic on
your Opteron.
Version 1.3 from the LinuxUser & Developer cover disc worked perfectly
well on this single-CPU Opteron 240, although it only seemed able to
detect the first 880MB of RAM, for example in gkrellm. JACK started
fine with the defaults too.
Just one suggestion - it's handy to have the envy24control
mixer/router utility for owners of M Audio Delta soundcards - I
couldn't find that. Alsamixer does work on these cards for adjusting
levels though.

BTW, yesterday i got a mail from Richard Stallman complaining that there
is no Emacs :DDD i'll put that too, is there some freaky EcaSound Lisp

Hi Jaromil,
I don't think it's a practical problem for a user like me, but I guess
if you were doing something like video work then you would want to
see all the RAM. This Opteron machine has 1GB, but that's not
unusually large these days.

Yes it is. I don't know if it should have a menu entry or not, because
it might confuse people who aren't using this chipset. I guess the
most elegant solution is to have a script which adds a menu entry if
the ice1712 driver is loaded. For these cards, you don't really need
any other mixer.
BTW, yesterday i got a mail from Richard Stallman

i'm currently testing dynebolic on pentiumI 166 computers found in the
trash, but i would be very interested to have any 64bit computer for
development of MuSE and of my distribution.
As of my present economical situation i can't really afford that, but i
can at least provide institutional credentials as the Nederlands
Instituut voor Mediakunst as well the dyne.org foundation (in fieri).

hardware, while pushing the boundaries of performance at the other
extreme.
i would be very interested to have any 64bit
