There is no such thing. As I was trying to explain (and I think if I
interpret correctly, Fons's point was also on the same lines) it would
make more sense to speak of *noise reduction strategies*. Think of it like
restoration of an old (ancient) 'something': is it a 1600s painting 
where you
would like to have colours as similar as possible as the painter made 
it? Is it
a sculpture which lost an arm which you want to reconstruct? Is it 
simply an old
dampened document you need to read the rare historical content from, 
where the
aesthetics of the paper and ink aren't so much relevant?

Once you have these aspects clear you can try experimenting with different
strategies.
Only then, after much experimentation, you can come back to the list and
say: "my research outcomes seem to prove that noise-gate plugins on
linux perform worst than noise gate plugins on XXX", and start a real,
entertaining flame about it :)
