Hi all,
In my recent discussion on the future of linux on the desktop, one of
suggestions was to look into the continually developing enlightenment
desktop solution which does have amazing efficiency as well as steady
development pace.
My recent investigation on the status of the project has revealed that the
project is in dire need of funding for the purpose of getting a new server.
This got squeaky cogs in my head turning and I began wondering what if
Linuxaudio.org offered them server space for their needs, especially since
this is one thing we can offer at practically no cost to us. I've not yet
bothered to mention this to the enlightenment team even in a form of a
remote possibility, namely because I am not sure if this is something
Linuxaudio.org wants to use its limited resources on...
So my question/poll to you is, would this be something that bears relevance
to our mission (IMHO it does, albeit indirectly).
Any ideas/comments?

Hi,
What kind of hosting do they need?
If it's just a location for their domain name then it's a small thing that
means a lot, but if it is for dev and software downloads they should use
sourceforge or google or any of the other software hosting services that
can handle the bandwidth requirements for such a widely distributed
project.

I suggest you enquire with http://osuosl.org/ on behalf of the E17 team
- as one academic to another :-)
I note that the E17 team has already raised 120% of its target:

Maybe if they used that money for the hardware, OSU OSL could provide
rack space, electricity and/or bandwidth for the server.

I think so. Although none of the audio distros I'm aware of currently
use E17 as the default desktop, it occurs to me that none of the lighter
window managers or desktops have the corporate backing that Gnome and
KDE have.
It would be a sad day for Linux audio if we were forced to use bloated
desktops which were designed as direct equivalents for the proprietary
competition. I believe many audio users have little need for 3D
acceleration in the desktop, and the hot-running (and therefore noisy)
hardware it can require.

FWIW, I am already exploring Xgl and/or AIGLX, in part because I do like the
eye-candy, but more importantly because today I do not have to sacrifice 3D
acceleration (think: Pd + Gem) at the expense of noise. My home system as
well as studio uses 7600GS and GT cards which are fanless and without lead
(talk about health-conscious ;-). On top of that, even under current setup
which relies upon alpha/beta 3D X servers I am already enjoying the wonders
of accelerated desktop where moving a window does not cause spikes in CPU.
So, not all is bleak in the wonderland of 3D ;-)

Since I constantly see remarks that Gnome and KDE dev's don't even
bother to listen to audio users, maybe it is a good idea to help another
team, with the side effect of them being a little more open towards our
needs.
But that of course was your point I guess.

I use and highly recommend NearlyFreeSpeech.NET for hosting.
Dirt cheap, great service, and technically they are serious geeks. How many other web
hosters give you emacs and CLISP (among others) in your SSH environment? Plus, they've
fully embraced the Open Source Ideology, which I support enthusiastically.
I can't imagine using anyone else for web hosting, especially if money is tight.

Ken, I think you are missing the point of my inquiry. Our hosting is totally
free since it is through the university. We are not however in position to
host something does not necessarily fall under our mission.
So, the question is whether we consider E17 project part of our mission and
if so should we offer them a free hosting service.
