Thanks - I've remixed your SVG logo in Inkscape, in an attempt to
simplify it. I'm not sure if it's quite there yet, but it's getting me
thinking :-)

I have access to DNS for the domain, so I can easily set up
lad.linuxaudio.org for example, which could potentially point to another
box.

Ico has pointed out that it would be better to use a machine at Virginia
Tech for this, as I'm paying commercial prices for bandwidth on the
machine that currently hosts linuxaudio.org.
I think the best short-term solution is for Ico to consolidate the
resources on his current machine at Virginia Tech until his new Linux
box is ready, and I'll set DNS to point to whatever IP Ico is using.
Later on, I can formally transfer the linuxaudio.org domain to the
registered not-for-profit organisation that Ico has proposed.
Cheers!

As mentioned earlier, every legal project/individual/whatever that actively
contributes towards Linux audio scene, including "upstream developers," is
more than welcome to apply for a membership. Personally, I've never refused
anyone's membership to the consortium if their work was compatible with our
mission. More so, I've sent many invitations to the upstream
projects/developers I felt were worthy. What I cannot do, though, is force
anyone to become a member.
If you would like to help me with recruitment of the upstream
developers/projects, you are more than welcome to do so, as I could use any
help I can get...

Merchandising, whether you like it or not, is an unavoidable aspect of our
mission if we wish to be successful in a society we live in. IMHO, it also
helps consortium gain credibility and consequently attract more of the
upstream developers/higher-profile projects/institutions/hw companies who may
be currently skeptical of our long-term prospects. Furthermore, all this
ultimately helps upstream projects as it helps link their product with the
end-user base. This should become especially important once (if?) we begin
supporting Linux audio artists as well.

I originally wanted to suggest making a separate thread for the sake of
clarity, call for a vote, and have everyone vote on it. However, this may not
help with the anonymity.
Alternately, we could generate a webpage where everyone could vote? I am
afraid, though, that doing so may take too much time as we need to be able to
link each vote with one member project/institution/whatever in order to ensure
that no one votes more than once, and for that we will have to have a more
involved framework.
Third option, which could be seen perhaps as a compromise, would be simply
having everyone e-mail director, mgmt. board chair (Dave) and possibly another
member (just in case you choose not to trust my or Dave's count (-: ),
directly off-list and then having us count the votes and report back to the
consortium.
Does anyone else have a better idea?
FWIW, *if* we vote the Ubuntu out, we will have to also consider doing so for
other existing members who fall into this category (which in and of itself
will be difficult to define as Mandriva, for instance, is for-profit company
while Ubuntu/Canonical isn't, etc.), as otherwise we will be projecting an
image of playing favorites which will subsequently warrant rewriting of the
consortium's mission, as well as result in locking-out of some of the
merchandising possibilities down the road (IMHO, this is a very slippery
slope). In addition, maintaining Ubuntu Studio membership will become
cumbersome as it will project a dubious message of supporting audio on a
distro that we appear not to be willing to endorse.

Greetings all,
First of all, please pardon the apparent lack of traffic on this list. I am
especially embarrassed by this considering my current function within the
consortium. For what it's worth, there has been a lot happening lately, it
was simply my inability to communicate new developments due to my recent
move and starting of a new job. Now, that I am finally settled in, I am
ready to share with you the latest developments.
So, in short, Linuxaudio.org is alive and well. More importantly, it is my
pleasure to use this opportunity to announce our latest members:
*Ubuntu Linux represented by Mark Shuttleworth
*Ubuntu Studio project (ubuntustudio.com) represented by Dana Olson
*Pure-Data represented by Miller Puckette
*Frinika software project (www.frinika.com) represented by Johan Salomonsen
*(CCM)2 studios at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of
Cincinnati represented by Dr. Mara Helmuth
*Virginia Tech Music Department, represented by Prof. John Husser
A number of memberships is still pending and I will inform you as soon as
they are finalized. I would like to use this opportunity to welcome our new
members and would encourage all representatives to please subscribe to the
consortium mailing list in order to keep up with the latest updates
regarding the Linuxaudio.org. The list can be found here:
http://lists.linuxaudio.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/consortium/
We are now in very exciting times as I feel that the consortium is finally
ready for the plan which has been proposed almost a year ago, namely to
incorporate the consortium in order to begin fund-raising for the purpose of
strengthening the consortium's mission and outreach. In order to bring this
plan to fruition, I would first of all greatly appreciate a response from
all who are currently subscribed to the consortium's lists, and more
importantly willing to be involved in the consortium beyond just
participating in the list's discussion. The purpose of this "roll call," if
you like, is very simple--in order to take the next step we will need to
generate several board seats who will oversee critical aspects of the
consortium, namely treasurer, PR representative, and secretary. Other duties
will be assigned as we expand the outreach and programs, so positions for
CD-series producer, awards manager etc. will become available as soon as we
complete the initial transition.
Please allow me to propose a roadmap for the coming months in reference to
the upcoming LAC:
BEFORE LAC (Linux Audio Conference that is to take place in late April
2006):
1) Ascertain current involvement of the consortium members
2) Use mailing list to refine current consortium's "mission statement" so
that it can accommodate the newly proposed expansion.
3) Discuss where will the consortium be incorporated
4) Seek nominees from the existing membership/board for the new board seats
AT LAC:
1) Generate Articles of Incorporation
2) Generate initial draft of bylaws
3) Start fund-raising program for the purpose of covering incorporation
charges (attorney and state fees)
4) Discuss budget ideas
5) Officially appoint nominees to the positions
6) Cover each board member's duties
FOLLOWING LAC:
1) File for 501c3 status (if filing in US) or the corresponding status as
available in the state where the consortium is to be incorporated
2) Finish registering the business
3) Begin fund-raising campaign
The reason why LAC is used as a referential point is because this year
Linuxaudio.org will present a talk in a form of annual report which will be
used as a catalyst for further discussion of the proposed developments as
well as a recruiting mechanism for new membership. For this reason, I would
like to address the aforementioned roadmap in a timely fashion.
As I mentioned earlier, a number of other ideas/projects are currently in
the works, including a potential move of the consortium's server to Virginia
Tech where we could enjoy better bandwidth and more disk space, both of
which would put us in a much better position regarding expansion and
offering enhanced content.
Please allow me to also use this opportunity to also bring your attention to
the consortium's release of the first volume of the "Made in Linux" CD
compilation titled "Tux Power!" which consists exclusively of works made
utilizing OSS software in conjunction with the Linux platform. More info on
the CD can be found on the linuxaudio.org website.
Finally, attached you will find the latest proposed logo for the
Linuxaudio.org. All of you are welcome to comment on, contribute, and/or
enhance the proposed logo. We will then vote on the selection and move from
there.

Please allow me to chime in here. Linuxaudio.org is not designed to be
exclusionary, but rather focused on a particular platform. This means that
cross-platform efforts which cater to the Linux platform are also very much
endorsed by the Linuxaudio.org (we already have a number of such memberships).
It is simply that the consortium's efforts are based on our focus, which is
currently the dominant libre platform.
As far as the logo is concerned, I agree that the "cutesy" factor may be seen
as distracting/inappropriate. FWIW, this at times can be also its strength as
it allows the logo to stand out. The actual "cute" factor is also
significantly diminished when the logo is reformatted to a web-usable size
(namely made significantly smaller).
It is also conceivable that certain sites/webmasters will be more prone to
including logos with penguins than others. For this reason, perhaps we could
also talk about having 1 official logo, but 2 or more web logos which would be
a variation on the original.
Most importantly, no matter which logo we pick, we should provide svg/png's
online for those who wish to provide link on their webpages.
Best wishes,
Ico
