Hello all,
For the third year, linuxaudio.org has been invited to take part in
the Sounds Expo trade show:
http://www.sounds-expo.co.uk/
It's at Olympia 2 in London on the 9th-11th March. We don't have any
stand sponsorship lined up yet, but I've talked to the organisers
about us taking part by giving presentations in the educational
theatres, or maybe setting up an informal demo in the bar area.
If anyone is able to get involved or just help out on those dates,
please let me know.
Cheers!
Daniel

Hello all,
The Linux Mark Institute, now part of OSDL it seems, is attempting to
charge organisations which use Linux in their name - even non-profits
like linuxaudio.org:
http://www.linuxmark.org/forms/linux_licence_doc.html#Check1
I think we should resist this move on principle. It may only be US
$200 per year at the moment for a non-profit, but I don't think it's
really in the spirit of free software to go round mugging people for
money like this. I thought the name Linux was trademarked to prevent
it from abuse.
Cheers

Hi Gary,
Thanks for the floorplan. Are you planning to use the basement level
floor at Olympia 2, or is it just the one at street level?
Previously, we haven't booked a stand number in advance, just fitted
in wherever was left. We don't have any funding for next year yet
either, but we would be happy to give some presentations in the
seminar programme, perhaps in the SoS Theatre.
Cheers!

Hello Gary,
Thanks for the invitation to be part of Sounds Expo next year - I
agree that the move to Olympia 2 is a good one, and the lower ceiling
should help with the acoustics.
Linuxaudio.org has provided an information stand at the last two
Sounds Expo events, and we would like to be involved again. As Ed or
Kieron will tell you, we rely on funding to cover the costs as we are
a not-for-profit organisation. Last year our stand was sponsored by
AMD.
I like the idea of the new Education Zone - perhaps we can help out
there. We could also put on some presentations, as we did last year.
Cheers!
Daniel James

A third option could be to sell them at cost (why should you lose
out?) as part of an open source project for pro-quality media
servers. That way the software stack could continue to be developed,
even if the RBX1600 hardware isn't in production.
The software could then run on other embedded hardware, or even a
recycled PC, although I appreciate that the CD jukebox control
hardware is probably specialised. Is there an equivalent interface on
a PCI card or perhipheral? I don't know of a low-cost way to provide
multiple optical inputs either, but I suspect as the cost of storage
continues to fall, RAID arrays will take the place of CD jukeboxes.
There are other projects working on media servers and broadcast
automation which you could augment, for example:
http://freevo.sourceforge.net/http://www.salemradiolabs.com/rivendell/
> The current RBX1600 software stack is dependent on a Linux port
> from MontaVista and a propertary JVM from IBM. I no longer have
> access to updates from MontaVista. I do have rights to some 900+
> IBM licenses but this is not an open source solution.
You might like to consider embedded Debian as an alternative:

Cheers!
