Sat Oct 30 1 pm PDT - Telenexica: Miller Puckette, Scott Deal, and Chris Chafe

Telenexica is a symposium where creators of telematic music Miller Puckette (Quacktrip, Netty McNetface, Music101), Scott Deal (Deck 10), and Chris Chafe (JackTrip) will showcase their art and software ingenuity. Featured collaborators include Irwin, Chuiyuan Meng, Elainie Lillios, Christopher Biggs, and Quarantine Sessions core members and guests. The name for this symposium--tele for "remote" and nexus for "connection"--was inspired by Pauline Oliveros' comment to Scott Deal on telematic music: "This is about relationships, isn't it?" In times when we especially need to connect, we will reflect on relationships and synchronicity, with an eye toward the world around us. The event will begin with a live performance by Miller Puckette and Irwin on Vimeo, followed by presentations in Jitsi by Scott Deal and Chris Chafe and discussion. As an MIT undergraduate he won the 1979 Putnam mathematics competition. He was a researcher at the MIT Media Lab from its inception until 1986, then at IRCAM, and is now professor of music at the University of California, San Diego. He has been a visiting professor at Columbia University and the Technical University of Berlin, and has received two honorary degrees and the SEAMUS award. Irwin Irwin has been active as a musician, beat-maker/programmer, producer, composer and sound designer for over three decades, and has toured as a side musician for a wide range of genres as well as his own solo live electronic performances throughout the U.S. and Europe. Irwin has worked on hundreds of music projects for film, gaming, live performance, and as a clandestine go-to 'ghost' producer/programmer/beat-maker within the music industry. About Miller Pucket and Irwin's performance Since the arrival of COVID, Irwin and Miller have continued their collaboration remotely using Quacktrip, with Miller controlling plug-ins on Irwin's computer in real time over the network. Their music is performed live on their own hardware instruments and software. Scott Deal Scott Deal engages new pathways of computer interactivity, networked systems, and electroacoustics. His recordings have been described as “soaring, shimmering explorations of resplendent mood and incredible scale." In the network arts, Deal is an award-winning creator, producer, author and performer. Deal and composer Matthew Burtner were awarded the Internet2 IDEA award for their creation of "Auksalaq", a telematic opera described as “an important realization of opera for today’s world”. He is the founder of Earth Day Art Model, a 24-hour, worldwide telematic Festival. Deal is the Director of Tavel Arts and Technology Research Center at IUPUI, Indianapolis. ESC is a networked, electroacoustic trio comprised of Elainie Lillios, Scott Deal, and Christopher Biggs. The group creates web-based sound art through networked means, using interactive technologies combined with acoustic percussion and creative media. Acclaimed as one of the “contemporary masters of the medium” by MIT Press’s Computer Music Journal, electroacoustic composer Elainie Lillios creates works that reflect her fascination with listening, sound, space, time, immersion, and anecdote. Scott Deal’s recordings have been described as “soaring, shimmering explorations of resplendent mood and incredible scale”….”sublimely performed”. Christopher Biggs is a composer and multimedia artist whose “original and unique musical language” blends dense, contrapuntal textures with direct, visceral expression. His music presents a “masterful combination between acoustic instruments and electronics” (Avant Scena). Chris Chafe Chris Chafe is a composer, improvisor and cellist, developing much of his music alongside computer-based research. He is Director of Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA). At IRCAM (Paris) and The Banff Centre (Alberta), he pursued methods for digital synthesis, music performance and real-time internet collaboration. CCRMA's SoundWIRE project involves live concertizing with musicians the world over. Online collaboration software including jacktrip and research into latency factors continue to evolve. An active performer either on the net or physically present, his music reaches audiences in dozens of countries and sometimes at novel venues. A simultaneous five-country concert was hosted at the United Nations in 2009. Chafe's works are available from Centaur Records and various online media. Gallery and museum music installations are into their second decade with "musifications" resulting from collaborations with artists, scientists and MD's. Chris Chafe will present excerpts from The Quarantine Sessions, a series of weekly international concerts that has been held online during the pandemic and is still continuing as of this writing.

Using jack with a Boss RC-505

Hi, I have been using jack for years without problems on my debian/stable PC running 4.19.0-17-rt-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT RT Debian 4.19.194-3 (2021-07-18) x86_64. I recently acquired a Boss RC-505 which is giving me trouble getting it's USB audio working. (By contrast I have a Scarlett 2i2 external USB sound card which works 100%) I use qjackctl to set jack up, and it is giving some error messages which I will include below. From the perspective of dmesg, lsusb and the info in qjackctl, it looks like the RC-505 is being detected correctly it seems. FYI when I set up qjackctl to use the RC-505 instead of the Scarlett, I see that jack is set up as follows: /usr/bin/jackd -dalsa -r48000 -p256 -n2 -Xseq -D -Chw:RC505 -Phw:PCH I am a programmer, so I'm not afraid to "get my hands dirty" - I just don't know where to start. What would you guys suggest? Answer to JackAudio Digest, Vol 22, Issue 1 Jack shows 22 outputs but only 8 produce a sound output

Hi I refer to the my own question from the 29/09/2021: Jack shows 22 outputs but only 8 produce a sound output > Please post the output of > ~$ aplay -L > and > ~$ aplay -l I have added the aplay -l and -L output in the appendix. I have found a workaround. If the Fireface 802 is operated in ClassCompliant mode and you have an iPad available, you can route the Fireface 802 with the iPad and Totalmix Fx App, which is the actual purpose of the ClassCompliant mode. The routing can then be saved in the setups and the multichannel mode can be set. Then I can just plug the USB cable back into my Linux PC and get sound output for all 12 channels. It's a bit of a hassle, but it works. Best regards, Sebastian

Jack shows 22 outputs but only 8 produce a sound output

Hello everyone, I'm new to this list and also new to Linux. I am a PhD student working on a research project with hearing impaired people. For our research studies we want to realize different audiological tests with a virtual acoustic sound system. The program we use for rendering the virtual acoustics runs in Linux. In our lab, we have a Fireface 802 sound card from RME. But RME doesn't offer support in Linux and unfortunately doesn't provide drivers. I run the Fireface in ClassCompliant mode and it is connected via USB to the computer with Ubuntu Studio 20.04 LTS as operating system. Basically the Fireface works, I can use 8 output channels for my sound playback via Jack. But the problem is that I actually want to get playback from 12 loudspeakers in our loudspeaker circuit. When I start Jack, it displays 22 output channels, but as I said, only 8 playback channels are playing sound. Could this be caused by the snd_usb_audio driver? Or how can I assign the output channels directly? About any suggestion for a solution I would be very happy!!! Best regards, Sebastian Roth

Problem with jack transport between VM host and VM guest

Hi, I'm using jack for years with my Focusrite Firewire device, formerly with Ubuntu Studio, now with Parrot Home. Recently I changed my DAW from Windows to Linux, using Ardour and Bitwig. For my old Windows VST plugins, which do not run with Wine, I use a QEMU/KVM virtual machine with Win7. To connect Host machine and VM, I run jack_load netmanager on the host and jackd -dnet -P12 -C2 -i1 -o1 -l1 in the VM. First they could not connect, but I suspect jack_load netmanager to listen only to the main network device eth0, but not the VM's network device virbr0. I found a workaround with smcroute; I configured it so it reroutes the Multicast messages from virbr0 to eth0. This solved the problem. Now I can connect the VM in/outs with qjackctl on the host, and I can play the Win7 VST plugins, as if they are running in Linux; perfect! But a problem with jack transport appeared: If the VM is not running, jack transport on the host is working as expected; click on the play button in qjackctl, and the counter runs; click again and the counter stops. If the VM is running, there is a delay of about 5 seconds from click on the play button, and the start of the counter. Stopping the transport works immediately. So this makes recording difficult. Qjackctl in the VM does not show jack transport running/stopping anyway; it can be started/stopped independently. With verbose messages on, this message from the host jackd appears regularly, no matter which transport status: Jack: CatchHost fd = 74 err = Resource temporarily unavailable After click on play button, but counter not running, repeatedly: Jack: JackNetMasterManager::SyncCallback returns 'false' Jack: CheckAllRolling ref = 8 is not rolling When counter runs, repeatedly: Jack: JackNetMasterManager::SyncCallback returns 'false' I assume that there exists still a network related mismatch between jackd on host and jackd in the VM, but I was not able to identify it. So I need some advice about jack transport and net mode. Btw, an option for jack_load netmanager would be nice, telling on which network device to listen. So people get aware of this case and can solve it without smcroute. Thanks, S.Auerochs

Jack client for APCmini

Dear all, I have written a jack client that uses an APCmini as a mixer and provides eight inputs/outputs and eight VU meters through it. CUE, PFL and transport control are also provided.
