Personally I think the possibility of Ubuntu or any
other Linux centered
dist, institution or project being ostracized for *any* reason is quite
strange. Even more so, because they are involved in a successful
business enterprise.
Second that.
In the past serious decisions have been made by the
Board of Directors
which is a private invite only mailing list with a smaller portion of
the original members included on it. However I am willing to code up a
page to allow anonymous votes for future decision making by everyone if
necessary.
True, although my understanding is that every member
project/institution/whatever, upon joining can opt for adding a voting member
to the board (as described at the bottom of the "About" page). Hence, I feel
that we need to adhere to the policy. That being said, I am not sure whether
Jaromil had ever opted to represent his project in the board as a voting
member nor am I aware of any log that would annotate that being done, but
assuming that he has, then he has every right to call for a vote.
It is my belief that this aspect of the consortium's structure will have to be
revisited, because as we grow, the current model will become more and more
unwieldy. But in the absence of the such a revision, I'd propose simply a
voting system which will ascertain what a majority of the Linuxaudio.org
membership wants to do in respect to Ubuntu, act upon this vote, hopefully
learn from the whole experience and move on. My hope is that we will then use
this situation as a model for restructuring of the current consortium's
hierarchy/board/whatever, so that we can better anticipate future occurrences
of similar situations.

Third that (if you can say it :-) ) In fact I don't believe Canonical is
profitable yet; it's funded by personal earnings from the dot-com
years. No different from how Paul Davis funded Ardour and JACK
development for so long.
Although 'high-net-worth' individuals attract attention, I don't see why
a free software company controlled by an individual is any worse than a
company controlled by VCs, bankers or by shareholders. Companies are
simply not democratic entities, and it would be naive of us to ignore
all the Linux-related development that goes on inside commercial
organisations.
Ingo Molnar's kernel work at Red Hat for instance. Red Hat has a market
capitalisation of well over five billion US dollars, making it many
times richer than Mark or Canonical (unless he has a few more billion
dollars hidden away somewhere).

OK, if you insist, then I can represent 64 Studio on the board. However
I believe it should be policy that the current Director can't be on the
board - otherwise the director could end up with the casting vote on
whether or not they should sacked, tarred and feathered, and sent into
exile in Redmond, WA ;-)
I will phase out using my 'official' daniel at linuxaudio.org address,
as I haven't been director for some time of course. I'll still keep
picking up that mail though, in case there are any enquiries from old
links, which I can forward to you.

from outside the consortium, just so theres no risk of any claims of
conflict of interest, eg. (not an endorsement, just google result)

Great suggestions, Steve. I agree on both accounts, especially on the
"exclusionist" aspect. We neither can afford to be exclusionist nor does
such a behavior seem to be compatible with our mission. Rather, IMHO we
should work on reinforcing the notion of variety we enjoy in a libre
community.

I reviewed the consortium about/mission statement;

The Linux Audio Consortium has no political, social,
religious, moral or economic devotion to a common
greater reality.
Are your objections for including Ubuntu based on
political and moral issues? Forgive me if you have to
clarify the obvious but that's all I seem to recall
from what I read. If your answer is yes then I do not
support your cause--despite my being an active
advocate for human rights.
Beyound those issues I see Ubuntu discussed on the
Linux Audio User mailing list so there's no argument
to convince me that they are not relevant to our
interests. There is an abundance of evidence in
practice and that matters a great deal.
If a vote is cast today then I am in favor of
including Ubuntu as a member of the Linux Audio
Consortium. Jaromil, I wouldn't express my position if
you didn't deserve to know where I stand.

nope. to resume, they are based on two main issues:
1) fostering variety and discouraging top-down branding of big

Whenever I hear Mark speak he always makes the effort to give credit to
the Debian project. Whether you believe Ubuntu is a fork of Debian or
maintains the feedback loop, I'd have to point out that before Ubuntu
came along, Debian was having severe difficulties in getting releases
out. I believe that Ubuntu has helped to re-energise Debian (even if
it's just through providing some competition in their back yard).

I don't think Ubuntu is likely to achieve that. Red Hat has reserves of
over $1 billion in cash and investments, Novell isn't poor either, and
Debian is not going away.

We already have Mandriva as a member, and that's not specifically about
audio - but like Ubuntu, it's a distribution that wants to contribute to
audio development and provide a better audio experience for its users.

1) perhaps make the center sphere a wireframe globe to suggest international
scope of the organization
2) Make arrows blend more (more curved? Shiny?)
3) Make the logo grayscale

Agreed, the wireframe is too busy, also, its still not quite a real sine
wave. The one linked obove is the one I like best too. The outward

is a branding issue--if we are *Linux* audio consortium, why are we not
emphasizing this fine distinction in our visual design?

It's the simplest, and doesn't have the wireframe. That wireframe will
disappear at smaller sizes anyhow.
I'd just vote that the waveform be thickened slightly, as in the ones
above it.

i agree to not vote on any member joining, still i
think it is fair to
give the possibility to a member of the board to propose a voting in
case of justified doubts.
despite your reiterated denigration of my positions i still believe to
have properly explained and justified my doubts about the pertinence of
Ubuntu being part of our consortium.
