BEAST/BSE version 0.5.4 is available for download at:
ftp://beast.gtk.org/pub/beast/v0.5
or
http://beast.gtk.org/beast-ftp/v0.5
BEAST (the Bedevilled Audio SysTem) is a graphical front-end to
BSE (the Bedevilled Sound Engine), a library for music composition,
audio synthesis, MIDI processing and sample manipulation.
The project is hosted at:
http://beast.gtk.org
This new development series of BEAST comes with a lot of
the internals redone, many new GUI features and a sound
generation back-end separated from all GUI activities.
The most outstanding new features are the track editor which allowes
for easy selection of synthesizers or samples as track sources, loop
support and unlimited UnDo/ReDo capabilities.
Note, the .bse file format hasn't fully stabilized yet, so
incompatibilities with future versions may occur, though we're
making every possible attempt to maintain backwards compatibility.
Overview of Changes in BEAST/BSE 0.5.4:
* Ported and improved synthesis module from David A. Bartold:
DavSynDrum - Synthetic drum generator
* Added support for control event editing
* Added per-note velocity and fine-tune editing
* Added support for per-track and per-song special effects
* Some GUI polishing
* Fixes to compile on NetBSD
* Miscellaneous bug fixes

Well, for many Christians it does not work that way unfortunately. Their
religion (Christiantity) teaches love and respect, but it also teaches that
the one true path is narrow and that it is not just enough to adhere to the
Christian ethos. It is necessary for them not to worship 'false' gods,
including those of the other major religions. It is not about Christian
values, it is about the Christian deity.
The problem with this whole discussion being of course one's perspective.
>From the believer-perspective, Paul's request is very reasonable, because
for him the existence of God is essentially an established fact and those
who do not worship him are in effect against him. From the non-believer
perspective however, it is downright insulting (in an intellectual and
personal way) to be called a Satanist. This is because to the non-believer
the non-existence of God or god-like creatures is essentially an established
fact and worshipping Satan is as unthinkable and rediculous as worshipping
any god. Even more so, it is insulting because Christians have no right to
call atheists with perfectly good moral standards 'evil' people.
So, to wrap it all up: Paul, while you have every right to make any request
regarding the usage of your software, please be aware of the fact that, to
atheists (incidentally, that is my camp) your choice of words is rather
offensive. If you want people to respect your ideas it might be a good idea
to start respecting other people's ideas as well and to stop calling Heavy
Meta l fans Satanists.
Regards,
Denis

STRICTLY PRIVATE & CONFIDENTIAL
Dr. Zamina Naps

Email: dayonaps4(a)aol.com
Dear Sir/madam,
It is my great pleasure to write you this letter on
behalf of my colleagues. Your information were given
to me by a member of the South African Export
Promotion Council (SAEPC) who was with the Black
Economic Empowerment Commission (Government)
delegation on a trip to the United States during a
bilateral conference talk to encourage foreign
investors. I have decided to seek a confidential
co-operation with you in execution of a deal hereunder
for the benefit of all parties, and hope you will keep
it confidential because of the nature of this
business.
Within the Department of Mining Resources where I work
as the Director of Project Implementation, with
co-operation of two other top officials, we have in
our possession, an overdue payment in US funds.
The said funds represent certain percentage of the
contract value executed on behalf of my Ministry by a
foreign contracting firm, which we the officials
over-invoiced to the amount of
US$41,500,000.00 (Forty One Million Five Hundred
Thousand United States Dollars). Though the actual
contract cost has been paid to the original
contractor, leaving the excess balance unclaimed.
The Government of the Republic of South Africa believe
that private investment in general, and foreign direct
investment in particular, are the real engines for
sustainable economic development, for which reason it
has continued to encouraged investment in the key
growth-oriented sector of Mining with sincere
determination to pay foreign contractors all debts
owed to them, so as to continue to enjoy close
relationship, and mutually beneficial co-operation
with foreign governments and non-governmental
financial agencies. As a result we included our bills
for approvals with the co-operation of some officials
at the Department of Finance and the Reserve Bank of
South Africa (RBSA). We are seeking your assistance to
be the beneficiary of the unclaimed funds, since we
are not allowed to operate foreign account. The
changing of beneficiary's information/ details and
other forms of documentation upon application for
claim to reflect the contract money and its approvals
will be secured on behalf of your company or your
self.
I have the authority of my colleagues involved to
propose that, should you be willing to assist us in
this transaction your share as compensation will be
20% while my colleagues and I shall receive 70%, and
the balance of 10% shall be used to reimburse all
expenditures, taxes and miscellaneous expenses so
incurred.
It does not matter whether or not your company does
contract projects of the nature described here. The
assumption is that your company won the major contract
and subcontracted it to other companies. More often
than not, big trading companies and firms of unrelated
fields win major contracts, and subcontract to more
specialized firms for execution.
This business itself is 100% safe, provided you treat
it with utmost confidentiality. Also your
specialization is not a hindrance to the successful
execution of this mutual beneficiary transaction. I
have reposed my confidence in you and hope that you
will not disappoint us. Kindly notify me for further
details, upon your acceptance of this proposal.
Regards,
Dr. Zamina Naps.

Hello all.
Here's the setup:
HW -
stoopid gateway e-3400
onboard AC'97 audio (blech!)
SW -
RedHat 9.0
portaudio (www.portaudio.com)
Now, the problem is portaudio is failing to play mono files. Portaudio lib
code is making an ioctl call that looks like this:
<snip>
int numChannels = 1 ;
ioctl( deviceHandle, SNDCTL_DSP_CHANNELS, &numChannels )
</snip>
This call doesn't fail, but when it returns 'numChannels' == 2. Portaudio
detects this and promptly dies.
Now, i just can't figure out if the problem is the onboard sound device is
just so crappy that it doesn't bother to support mono, or if there is some
wierd kernel module i can build that will fix this issue.
This isn't the worlds biggest deal, but it's just bugging me, you know?
thanks

It seems every time theres a new release of ZynAddSubFX, a lot of mails
fly around regarding Paul's religious statement on his website...
It does start to get a bit repetitive, so lets just acknowledge the work
put into his software...
Those of us who make evil music (that doesn't imply me!) can still use
his software, but will just go to hell ;-)
