Yes, generally, unless you have multiple tracks in your project sidechains
are not relevant... I suppose you could exdpose the sidechain input to jack
and receive sidechain audio that way.
What Conrad is
talking about is distinguishing audio rate control inputs
from control rate control inpputs, which is a valid concern, but unrelated
to the original point.
