I doubt this is a hardware limitation. The hardware just renders to AGP or
local memory. I may be wrong though...

As I checked the info on mergedfb, it seemed to me that it is a hardware
limitation, but most common hardware can do it, but they don't disclose
how, everyone their own shiny binary only module :/
That doesn't really help X to treat it uniformly across different cards.
