That's not much better than not having a plugin API at all. To
support direct-from-disk sampling, the host would have to be a
*sampler*. Why have an *instrument* plugin API, then? It doesn't
make much sense to me to run synths inside a sampler... :-)

there's bound to be a
white noise plugin

A white noise generator isn't an instrument? If you can turn it on
and of in a somewhat rhythmical sense, I'd say it is! ;-)
