Steve, do let us know if you succeed. I have the same issue with the
compiler, so if you can get it built with 2.96 that would be good news
for me too.
gcc3 is required for some c++/stl features. last time i looked 2.95
didn't support them. please drop me a note if (any of) you succeed and
i'll update the documentation. autoconf/automake/libtool problems should
go away as soon as i find the time to cook a proper distribution ...
