Google for diversity reception, I think you will be surprised by just how far
back this trick goes. I know people were doing it with FM radio mics in the
eighties and probably well before then.
The radio astronomers are of course the world experts at this, see projects
like the 'very long baseline array' for a project using software to combine
the outputs of **LOTS** of geographically separated radios.
You need really good clocks to pull this off well.
