This whole thread reminds me of a short story written by Robert Heinlein back
in the late 40's or early 50's. In it, a consulting engineer (named
'Waldo',
hence the story's title) is called in to investigate why the power
utility's 'radiant power system' is undergoing seemingly inexplicable
failures. Turns out that the whole 'science' of 'radiant power' is quite
literally *imaginary* -- it was the mental energy of the system's users that
was creating the power, and all that was needed was for people to *want* it
to work hard enough! Absolutely hilarious.
Cheers!
